Best pubs in Oban

The restaurant "The Corryvreckan - JD Wetherspoon" in Oban, Scotland, is a typical example of the well-known British pub chain J D Wetherspoon, famous for its affordable prices, extensive selection of food and drinks, and relaxed atmosphere. It is located in a picturesque setting overlooking Oban Bay, making it not only a spot for locals but also a popular destination for tourists exploring the beauty of the Scottish west coast.

Affordable restaurants in Scotland

The name "The Corryvreckan" is inspired by the famous Corryvreckan whirlpool, one of the largest and most dangerous maelstroms in the world, located between the islands of Jura and Scarba. This naming is reflected in the interior decor, which features nautical elements such as an impressive cast of a sea eagle and historical driftwood from the sea. The pub itself is housed in a modern building with high vaulted wooden ceilings, which give the space an open and inviting atmosphere. The design is spacious and airy, accommodating many guests, even though it can get quite busy on hectic days.

Scottish breakfast options in pub

The culinary offerings are diverse, covering both classic pub dishes and some special highlights. Breakfast, served until noon, is particularly popular, featuring hearty options like the traditional Scottish breakfast with haggis, as well as lighter alternatives. For later in the day, dishes such as the spicy Katsu curry are available, often highlighted by guests as filling and flavorful. The mixed grill, a hearty meat dish, and the handmade pizzas are also favorites. Vegetarian options are available, including a vegetarian breakfast, which is appreciated despite occasional criticism regarding the temperature of the food.

Delicious dishes at Wetherspoon

The drinks menu is another hallmark of the establishment. In addition to a wide selection of real ales, often sourced from English breweries, there are craft beers, a variety of gins, and the Italian premium lager Poretti, which stands out for its full-bodied flavor. Coffee lovers can enjoy freshly ground Lavazza coffee, offered throughout the day with free refills.

Harbor view dining in Oban

Service is often described as fast and friendly, with ordering via the Wetherspoon app providing a modern and convenient option. However, there is occasional criticism regarding the cleanliness of the tables or the organization at the bar, especially during peak times. The location directly by the harbor contributes to a vibrant atmosphere, though the diesel smell from passing ships can be bothersome for some guests. Those sitting outside should also be wary of the bold seagulls that like to try and snatch a piece of food.

Well Covid organised. Have to use their app to order which I found difficult but member of staff helped me overcome that hurdle. However app is pretty poor. For instance cannot ask for burger without the bun or choose not to have onion rings. Cannot ask for poppadoms instead of naan bread. You could do all this and more when ordering at the bar so would rate this app as very poor. Updated in 2024. The staff for the most part are delightful but the menu has changed and not for the better. Drinks are more expensive and it's no longer somewhere I would choose to go if there was any choice. It remains very convenient for the ferry terminal.

Lovely views over the Atlantic. Can watch all the ships coming in. Got a few drinks. Very reasonable and the food was fried but tasty. It's got an outdoor area if you prefer
